Clarets exit Carabao Cup at Goodison Park

Burnley’s Carabao Cup run came to an end on Wednesday night as the Clarets fell to a 3-0 defeat to the Blues.

Everton took the lead with 13 minutes played through James Tarkowski’s header before Amadou Onana doubled the Toffees’ lead in the second half. Ashley Young then added a third in stoppage time.

Manager Vincent Kompany made seven changes from the side that played at AFC Bournemouth on the weekend.

Arijanet Muric came into goal for James Trafford, whilst Hannes Delcroix replaced Charlie Taylor in left-back with the rest of the defence as it was at the Vitality.

Sander Berge, Mike Tresor and Nathan Redmond were all brought into the XI with Josh Brownhill, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Anass Zaroury making way.

In attack, Zeki Amdouni and Luca Koleosho were replaced by Jay Rodriguez and Jacob Bruun Larsen.

First Half

After a quiet opening 10 minutes on Merseyside, the Toffees forced the first effort on target when Garner worked himself to the edge of the area before teeing up Onana to rifle towards goal for Muric to gather.

Just three minutes later the hosts did break the deadlock when two former Clarets combined and McNeil lifted the ball into the area for Tarkowski to guide into the bottom corner past Muric.

McNeil came close to adding a second shortly after but the winger’s effort sailed well over the crossbar.

As the Clarets looked to get themselves back into the game, Kompany’s side nearly came close to an equaliser. Rodriguez broke towards goal before spreading it out wide for Berge who weaved into the area and looked to return to Rodriguez but Garner made a last-ditch interception to deny the Burnley No.9 from slotting home from close range.

Burnley settled into the cup tie and pushed for a response as the break approached, but Everton’s defence denied the Clarets any shot on goal with the Toffees heading into the break ahead.

Second Half

The Blues started on the second half on the front foot and got their second goal of the night when McNeil’s corner found Tarkowski at the back post who cushioned a header to Onana to tap home from a few yards out.

Dyche’s side had the chance to add a third when Calvert-Lewin raced in on goal and squared for Danjuma only for O’Shea to make a vital interception and take the ball away from the area.

With the Clarets trailing on the hour mark, Kompany introduced the attacking trio of Zaroury, Odobert and Amdouni for Rodriguez, Redmond and Bruun Larsen.

As the tie drew towards a close Young then slotted home a third to seal the victory for the hosts.
