Defender dissects Magpies defeat

Dara O’Shea was disappointed following a difficult day for the Clarets, as Newcastle United took the win at a rainy Turf Moor on Saturday.

Scoring his third goal of the campaign and his first at home, he said after the game: “It was a poor day for us, not what we wanted today. I thought we started the game really brightly, caused them some problems and it was probably too easy to concede those goals. And that was the game done then which was unfortunate you know because of how well we started and how promising it was.”

Vincent Kompany’s men started brightly, which has often been the case this season, but were undone by three first half goals from Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimarães. Did the first half just provide too big a mountain to climb?

“Yes definitely, look you get punished if you make mistakes in the Premier League and if you’re not there in that split second you get punished and that’s unfortunate. I think that’s happened a lot this season, us making mistakes and getting on the wrong end of it and probably on the other side of it not punishing teams and waiting for their mistakes.

“So, it’s a tough one to take again today.

“It’s hard, momentum’s going their way. They’re playing some nice football and catching us on the counter. I suppose that’s when we need to come together and regroup. Try and get as much experience as we have in the team to show and pull us through.”

Goalkeeper Muric made some excellent saves throughout including an Alexander Isak penalty in the second half and O’Shea scored late on, his first goal at Turf Moor.

“Yes Aro made a great save for the penalty. Probably just unfortunate that we were already a couple behind then. I scored a goal too, which is nice, but I’m not really happy, today I’m disappointed – I want to keep a clean sheet before I score a goal.

“I suppose it’s a small positive scoring my first goal at the Turf. Hopefully I can score a few more but I want to keep more clean sheets.”

The Irish international said the squad will keep on fighting and keep on hoping.

“There are still two massive games to go. Spurs is a big game for us, we have to get a win there with the results that happened today.

“We want to give ourselves the best chance going into the last day, we want to bring it back here and hopefully have something to play for you know.

“We have to do our best against Spurs, they’re tough opponents – like today. But I think we need to have a good week again, regroup and collect that belief again. Go into that game with our heads high, full of confidence. Maybe write today off but also take some learning curves.”
